Many times, we hear the phrase “think outside the box” but in order to do so first the box dimensions must be determined. In many cases the dimensions are present but, in the rush, to be unique in an approach we ignore the obvious.
When pre-sizing holes for clinical activation of locator attachments I reach for the pick-up impression copings to portray minimum space needs for them. They possess the circumferential and depth dimensions I need to provide clearance. At that point I can provide extra needed space for resin that will be used in chairside activation. The less sloppy the holes the better strength the activation since the resin used to do so is inferior to the heat cured resin used in the final appliance.
These are the type of ideas I provide as a dental laboratory consultant and laboratory.
