I finally got some time to post. Between case work and designing my LMT 2025 Presentation next month.
In removable prosthetics the term “stabilized” baseplate is used to describe a baseplate that becomes fixed or stops changing. For the most part, in most people’s mind it is a general description.
But when referring to a baseplate we must remember that it is a “platform” to support/hold a registration material in place to record a bone-to-bone relationship. It is paramount that movement of those bases be non-existent or as little as possible.
There are several ways to “stabilized the base. In cases where a full coverage baseplate cannot be obtained due to existing dentition, I have found that clasping the baseplate affords the “stability” needed to obtain an accurate registration. Due to the warmth of intraoral placement, I also like to use a harder wax than mere baseplate wax as I want to avoid having compression of the wax during the registration process. Once the rim is trimmed, it should accommodate space for a material such as Blue Mousse to eliminate proprioceptive stimulus.
