Providing space for chairside activation of locator attachments.

Matrix Dental Laboratory and Consulting is a dental laboratory and laboratory consulting service operated by Thomas Zaleske

On many occasions my dental accounts prefer to set the attachments chairside. This is a good thing. From things I have read and through past experiences allowing for the denture a few days of function before activation, allows for tissue to compress and acclimate to the fit. This aids in preventing the denture attachments from being asked to support rather than to retain the denture.

To aid in providing ideal space, I use a technique where I use heat shrink tubing to prevent over adjusting the holes and provide only a slight increase in circumferential space. The non stick property of the tubing allows for easy removal after processing.
The tubing fits perfectly around the locator attachment and once heated with a heat gun, shrinks tightly around the locator cap.
The tubing is cut “flush” with the cap so as to not interfere occlusally.
Rubber sep is applied around the circumference of the tubing to prevent the acrylic from creeping underneath. A small amount is also applied to the top to also prevent acrylic from finding its way in.
Once the rubber sep is dry, its ready to pack or inject.
